Wireless Router Guide

Router Makes -- There are many to choose from however, it is important to know some basic facts about these devices: Wireless routers with Internet connection sharing, networking and firewall features are an alternative to Wired routers or Networking Software. Wireless routers are actually wired routers with wireless access points built in so you can have wired and/or wireless at the same time. Wireless routers must be connected to your cable or DSL Modem provided by your Internet Service Provider. There are however, wireless router with a built-in DSL or cable modems but they are more costly.

Security -- Although Wireless routers are not as secure as hard wired, with the right configuration you can lock your connection down. Be sure to configure your wireless & security settings correctly and perform thorough testing.

Testing -- We recommend that you test all aspects of your firewall features of a wireless router after installation and if your sharing your data across a networt it is recommended to get an expert to configure and test it for you.

Firmware -- Firmware updates are common on all routers. Router manufacturers release update to add new features and to fix bugs within their software. Always check for firmware updates after installing your router.

Prices -- Vary from brand to brand depending on type & speed.

Checklist for Choosing Network Software

Consider these factors to determine which network solution is right for your business. You may choose to set up a peer-to-peer network now and move up to a client server network later. Windows NT Server fits right in with existing networks. That means you can move from peer-to-peer to client/server networking without losing your original investment.
